WHAT A GOOD EPISODE

Okay I realize it is nothing new or noteworthy to say that Spock embodies a struggle between rationality and emotion. We know that, everybody knows that, the show drives it home from the very first episode. But this episode delivered all of that for me in my favorite ways!

There is this very interesting theme that was brought up in “The Nature of Man,” when Kirk is split into two parts by a transporter accident (simplistically referred to as “good” and “evil” Kirk, but Spock sums it up better as essentially “reason” versus “primal drive”). When Kirk is deprived of his primality, the part of him that reacts on emotion and is driven by carnal needs, he is no longer capable of command. His rational side slowly loses the confidence needed to make decisions and order people around. It’s implied that for Kirk, at least, command comes from somewhere deep and uncontrollable and almost savage, just channeled into something positive and productive.

And now we see Spock, Mr. Rationality himself, unable to maintain command. He loses the respect of his men (the one especially angry guy made a very obvious shift to addressing him as “Spock” instead of with any title and Spock never reacted, allowing him to continue being angry and insubordinate). He can’t keep his crew members alive because he doesn’t factor in emotions like fear and rage in his enemies. He’s brilliant, but when under direct attack instead of thinking of ways to save everybody he starts musing to everybody about how illogical it is that he is not doing well!! He is commanding by reason and rationality, why are there dead people?? And everyone is too busy fighting for their lives to explain it to him, no matter how genuinely confused and sort of pleading he looks.

Meanwhile, Kirk is up in the Enterprise desperately trying to find Spock’s party, restrained by bureaucracy that’s going to force him to leave them. And he does what Kirk does: doesn’t outright rebel, but insinuates rebellion; he leaves the planet very very slowly just in case!!! even though we’ve learned that Spock believes Kirk wouldn’t stay at all. Illogical to stay. So while Spock is dealing with an inner rational drive clashing badly with his emotional environment, Kirk is dealing with an inner emotionality clashing with the officially “rational” nature of command. GOSH I love character duality.

And the thing that saves them all is Spock’s panic! His emotional reaction to a thing, after being saved by everybody else having an emotional reaction to him being in danger. In TOS-verse, despite whatever the commanders and bureaucrats of Star Fleet may say, “command” actually comes straight from the gut and nowhere else.

…Which isn’t actually saying something everybody didn’t know about TOS already, w/e.

This show is really big on emotions! I like emotions. It always makes me a bit uncomfortable when either Kirk or the entire crew team up against Spock to try and make him admit that he was being emotional!!! because hey, lay off the guy, that’s not cool. But it’s really interesting to see him try to play it off. He literally justifies having a panic attack by saying it was logical to have a panic attack, when it’s like Spock, honey, you don’t have to justify those, they are something that kind of happens to people who are convinced they are about to die!

Sigh, gush, I love Spock, this was a predictable outcome.

All of these “spoilers” all over my dash, what even.

Can I please just turn a blind eye and plug my ears and sing really loudly and just wait for the trailer to come out instead of letting my hopes and dreams for this movie get slowly torn apart by all of this supposed “new information” that’s been appearing?

New Star Trek game trailer and information

“If you take it back to day one when we started talking about making a game, and you break down what Star Trek is,” said Brian Miller, Senior Vice President and Producer at Paramount Pictures, “it really is the story of Kirk and Spock, which is halves of the same whole.”
